Troy City Schools selected to participate in voluntary COVID-19 school testing program

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Beginning Monday, Nov. 23, our district will begin participating in the Ohio COVID-19 School Evaluation (OCSE) testing program. This pilot program will give school districts, public health experts and elected officials more scientific data regarding quarantines related to positive novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in school. The study will be conducted at all nine of our school buildings. We are one of 10 districts in the state of Ohio to have been selected for this program.

The study will assess whether students and staff identified as close contacts to the individual testing positive do in fact need to stay home and miss school if those in the classroom were wearing masks correctly. The pilot is being run by The Ohio State University with assistance from Wright State University, Ohio University, Dayton Children’s Hospital and the Post-Acute Rapid Response Team (PARRT).

Your Help Is Needed

Participation in this program is completely voluntary. If your child is required to quarantine as a close contact, you may be asked to have him or her participate in this study. This would mean your child would receive a quick nasal swab twice a week for two weeks. As long as the test is negative and your child doesn’t develop COVID-19 symptoms for the duration of the quarantine period, your child may remain in school. If the test is positive, they would be required to isolate at home immediately.

If you choose to participate, your child may attend school, however, he or she would need to stay at home when not in school for the complete quarantine period. This includes not participating in extracurricular activities. The study will also ask for students and staff identified as low-risk contacts to consider participating in the study.

Additionally, the study will require a control group of students to be tested for COVID-19 two times in a two week period. These students will be tested once a week for two weeks and would not have been exposed to our positive individual.

In order to expedite the process, if you would like your child to be able to participate in either the quarantine group or control group, you may complete the consent forms ahead of time. You must fill out a separate form for each of your students. Click here for more information and a consent form for your child’s participation. By submitting the consent form, it does not guarantee your child’s participation in the study. However it does allow us to have your consent on file, in the event your child is asked to participate.

Thank you for all that you and your child are doing to keep our schools healthy. Please continue to wear your masks and avoid large gatherings so that we can remain in school.
